At Scholar Green we use a synthetics phonics programme called 'Read Write Inc' to introduce our pupils to reading. Read Write Ic is a method of learning centred around letter sounds and phonics, blending them together to read and write words and using these learnt sounds in their reading and writing.  In EYFS and Ket Stage 1 pupils will participate in a daily phonic programme to create fluent, enthusiastic readers, confident speakers and willing writers.

Scholar Green adopts a whole school approach to develop writing skills across learning.  Pupils and enthused to write in the contexts which present themselves naturally through curriculum topics and through the pupils' current learning.  This ensures real purpose and relevance.  In each new context breadth, progression and depth are ensured by building on and revisiting skills previously developed.

Please view our gallery of writing, showing examples of writing from across the curriculum, across the school.

Speaking and listening

Talking is fundamental to learning.  Pupils at Schoalr Green are encouraged to speak clearly, confidently and with expression in order to state their ideas and opinions.  Just as important is the need to listen carefully to others and respond in appropriate ways.  At Scholar Green, pupils are given opportunities in all areas of the curriculum to develop their speaking and listening skills, in paired, group or whole class situations.  Therefore, role play, small world and drama activities are intrinsic elements of speaking and listening across the school.  The use of Kagan co-operative learning structures scaffold talk and enable all pupils to engage in their lessons through speaking and listening activities.
