SMSC & British Values

Here at Scholar Green, we incorporate the teaching of SMSC and British Values throughout the curriculum, during assemblies and in after school activities.  A school designed curriculum enables us to ensure that we do all that we can to help our pupils develop into self-assured, confident, happy, positive young people.

What is SMSC?

SMSC stands for spiritual, moral, social and cultural. All schools in England must show how well their pupils develop in SMSC.

Pupils are marked on ability and willing.

Spiritual

Explore beliefs and experience; respect values; discover oneself and the surrounding world; use imagination and creativity; reflect.

Moral

Recognise right and wrong; understand consequences; investigate moral and ethical issues; offer reasoned views.

Social

Use social skills in different contexts; work well with others; resolve conflicts; understand how communities work.

Cultural

Appreciate cultural influences; participate in culture opportunities; understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity.

What are 'British values'?

Fundamental British values' are:

  • democracy
  • the rule of law
  • individual liberty and mutual respect
  • tolerance of those with different faiths and belief

Teaching British values enables Scholar Green students to....

  • develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence
  • distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England
  • accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative, and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely
  • acquire a broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in England
  • develop further tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by enabling students to acquire an appreciation for and respect for their own and other cultures
  • respect for other people, and
  • respect democracy and support for participation in the democratic processes, including respect for the basis on which the law is made and applied in England.
