Remembrance Day

Lesson: Understanding the World

Class: Miss Hancock - Reception (EYFS) Year: 2014 - 2015

On the 11th day, of the 11th month, on the 11th hour we remembered the soldiers who had thought in the words wars. We felt this was a very important day so we did lots of activites to help us understand what it is all about. Along with Little Scholars we looked at some pictures and thought about some of the words and feeling we might use. Gemma from Little Scholars had brought in a picture of her Grandad, who had fought in the war, and he was wearing his uniform. Mrs Cliffe had brought in some clothes that we could look at and dress up in so we could the real feel of being a soldier.

We thought about the signs and symbols we have to help us remember. We found poppies growing in our playground so we drew or painted them. We also made poppies using our little hand prints to go on our school display- a little bit like the poppies at Windsor Castle. We looked at poppy seeds and baked lemon and poppy seed muffins with them- they were delicious!

All of these activities heped to understand a little bit about the world wars and the role of soldiers today. And, eventhough we are small and it was a long time ago we said we would do our best to remember them

Lest we forget.
