Mathematics In Action

Scholar Green Primary School – How do we teach Mathematics?

In September. every year group starts their mathematics learning with a unit on place value. This helps them to embed their understanding of number before moving on to calculate. The children then move on to looking at addition and subtraction. In the Eearly Years, this means being introduced t to the symbol and the many words that can be used for addition. In year 1, children write maths stories (8 + 2 = 10) and focus on number bonds to 10 and 20.In Year 1, a great deal of the mathematics learning is done through the provision in the outside area as well as the learning that happens within the classroom.

As they move into Year 2 this extends to addition within 100 and the children use their understanding of number bonds to 10 to help them calculate number bonds to 100.

In Year 3 as children work through Key Stage Two, they are introduced to the formal written method for addition and subtraction which draws on their understanding of place value as they have to line the columns up correctly.

Have a look at some of the things we have been busy doing already this term.
