Andy Harrington - Chair of Governors

The Role of the Governors

We focus on what matters most: the safety, happiness, inclusion, and achievement of every child.

Governors provide:

  • Strategic leadership — setting the school's vision, ethos, and direction.

  • Critical friendship — supporting and challenging senior leaders constructively.

  • Robust accountability — holding the school to account for:

    • Quality of education (curriculum, teaching, and achievement)

    • Attendance and behaviour

    • Personal development and wellbeing

    • Inclusion (a standalone evaluation area, ensuring support for disadvantaged pupils, those with SEND, and anyone facing barriers)

    • Safeguarding (“Met/Not Met” judgement)

    • Early Years provision (where applicable)

We ensure all decisions are evidence-informed, reflect our pupils' and community's real needs, and drive continuous improvement.

Our governance is always rooted in the school's context, with a strong emphasis on pupil and staff wellbeing.

Our Core Responsibilities

As governors, we carry out six key duties to support the school's effectiveness and pupil success, in line with Ofsted's Education Inspection Framework:

  • Safeguarding — Ensuring robust systems, training, culture, and vigilance keep every child safe (judged as “Met/Not Met” by Ofsted).

  • Vision & Strategy — Setting the school's clear direction, ethos, and priorities, while monitoring progress and driving continuous improvement.

  • Quality of Education — Overseeing the ambitious curriculum, teaching quality, achievement, and outcomes for all pupils.

  • Inclusion & Wellbeing — Championing inclusion (a standalone evaluation area) and pupil/staff wellbeing, ensuring equity and targeted support for disadvantaged pupils, those with SEND and those facing barriers.

  • Finance & Resources — Ensuring value for money, effective resource use, and financial probity.

  • Statutory Compliance & Leadership Oversight — Fulfilling legal duties (e.g., SEND, equality, data protection, policies) while supporting and challenging school leaders constructively.

These responsibilities ensure we hold leaders to account, assure ourselves of the school's accurate context, and contribute meaningfully to improvement for our community.

Our Strategic Priorities

Our governing body sets and monitors priorities that directly support the school's effectiveness and align with Ofsted's renewed Education Inspection Framework (EIF) evaluation areas. These focus on delivering high standards for every child:

  • Pupil and Staff Wellbeing — Monitoring and promoting wellbeing, including managing workload to support a positive, sustainable environment for learning and teaching.

  • School Improvement — Tracking progress against the School Development Plan (SDP) and Self-Evaluation Form (SEF) to drive evidence-informed, continuous improvement.

  • Inclusion & Equity — Ensuring high expectations, equity of access, and targeted support for all pupils, including disadvantaged, those with SEND, and anyone facing barriers (a standalone evaluation area).

  • Community & Stakeholder Engagement — Actively listening to parents, carers, and the wider community to strengthen relationships and incorporate voices into our work.

  • Curriculum & Teaching Quality — Overseeing an ambitious, well-sequenced, and effective curriculum that meets the needs of all pupils and secures strong outcomes.

  • Safeguarding Excellence — Maintaining consistently high standards, robust culture, systems, and vigilance to keep every child safe (“Met/Not Met” standalone judgement).

These priorities guide our strategic leadership, accountability, and partnership with school leaders to ensure sustained impact for our pupils and community.

How We Govern

We ensure effective, strategic governance that supports high standards, pupil success, and continuous improvement in line with Ofsted's Education Inspection Framework:

  • Full Governing Body Meetings — 6 meetings per year to review progress, set direction, and hold leaders to account.

  • Link Governor Roles — Dedicated governors for Safeguarding, Curriculum, SEND, Finance, and specific subjects to provide focused oversight and support.

  • Regular School Visits — Governors undertake planned visits to observe teaching, pupil engagement, and impact first-hand, gathering direct evidence.

  • Ongoing Training — All governors access regular professional development to stay up to date with national expectations, legislation, and best practice.

  • Targeted Monitoring — Systematic review of safeguarding, curriculum quality, finance, inclusion (including support for disadvantaged/SEND pupils), attendance, behaviour, and wellbeing.

  • Code of Conduct & Nolan Principles — We adhere to a formal Code of Conduct grounded in the Seven Principles of Public Life (selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty, leadership) to ensure ethical, transparent governance.

All monitoring activities are aligned to our Governor Planner, ensuring structured, evidence-informed, and timely oversight across our strategic priorities.

Our Impact

We are proud of the tangible difference our governing body makes to Scholar Green Primary School. Through strategic oversight, challenge, and support, we contribute directly to better outcomes for pupils, staff, and the wider community, fully aligned with Ofsted's Education Inspection Framework emphasis on effective leadership and governance.

Recent examples of our effective governance include:

  • Strengthened budget oversight — Ensuring financial decisions deliver maximum value for money and that resources directly benefit pupils' learning and experiences.

  • Supported curriculum refinement — Working with leaders to develop and monitor an ambitious, well-sequenced curriculum, with focused tracking of progress in core subjects to secure strong outcomes for all.

  • Improved safeguarding processes — Enhancing systems, staff training, and culture to maintain consistently high standards and vigilance (“Met/Not Met” judgement readiness).

  • Promoted pupil voice and wellbeing — Actively incorporating pupil perspectives in meetings and school visits, while monitoring and championing pupil and staff wellbeing to foster a positive, supportive environment.

  • Strengthened SEND oversight — Ensuring inclusive provision meets individual needs, removes barriers, and supports equity for disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND (key standalone evaluation area).

All our actions are evidence-informed, feed into the school's self-evaluation (SEF), School Development Plan (SDP), and ongoing improvement planning. This demonstrates our commitment to holding leaders to account while driving sustained progress.

Our detailed 'Governor Impact' Document (which expands on these examples with evidence and outcomes) can be found at the bottom of this page for full transparency.
