Welcome to Year One

Welcome to Year One!

A very warm welcome to Year One! We are excited for a fantastic year full of learning, exploring, creativity and fun. In Year One, we work hard, challenge ourselves and celebrate our successes, but we also believe that play, curiosity and having fun are an important part of learning.

For regular updates and a glimpse into all the exciting things we have been doing, please visit the Scholar Green Primary Facebook page. You will be amazed by the wonderful experiences, activities and adventures the children take part in!

PE Days

Our PE days are Wednesday and Thursday. On these days, children should come to school wearing their PE kit instead of their school uniform. Please ensure that:

  • Hair is tied back securely.
  • Children do not wear jewellery or watches.
  • Earrings must be removed before coming to school.

Reading

Reading is a key part of your child’s learning journey. We encourage all children to read at least 4 times per week at home. Please record each reading session in your child’s reading diary. Reading diaries are checked every Monday, and children who regularly read four times a week and have their diary signed will be celebrated and rewarded in class.

Our Author of the Half Term

This half term, our focus author is Tony Ross. We will enjoy exploring his wonderful stories, characters and illustrations as we develop our love of reading.

Year One Homework

Homework in Year One is designed to support learning and build positive routines:

  • Reading: 4 times per week (around 20 minutes each session), recorded in reading diaries by parents/carers.
  • Spellings: Weekly practice.
  • NumBots: A weekly online maths activity (minimum 20 minutes per week) to develop number fluency and confidence.

Although homework will not be collected in a physical homework book, children’s engagement will be monitored through NumBots, spelling practice and reading diaries.

I am looking forward to working with you and your children this year. Thank you for your support in helping your child have a happy, successful and exciting Year One experience. If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
