Science

At Scholar Green Primary School, science is a dynamic and inspiring subject that encourages curiosity, creativity and critical thinking from Nursery through to Year 6. Our science curriculum is designed to spark curiosity, encourage questioning and develop a lifelong love of discovery. We believe that children learn best through practical, hands-on experiences, and as such, our science lessons are rich with opportunities for experimentation, investigation and exploration. Pupils are encouraged to think like scientists by making predictions, testing ideas, observing closely and drawing conclusions from their findings.

Our carefully sequenced curriculum builds scientific knowledge and enquiry skills progressively across each year group, enabling children to develop a deep understanding of the world around them. We make strong links between science and the wider curriculum, using enrichment activities and educational visits to bring learning to life and deepen pupils' understanding. By connecting learning to real-world issues such as climate change, sustainability, health, technology and innovation, children begin to recognise the relevance of science in their everyday lives and its importance in shaping the future.

In an increasingly technological and rapidly changing world, scientific understanding is more important than ever. By the time our pupils leave Year 6, we want them to have a secure understanding of the key scientific concepts taught throughout primary school and the confidence to apply this knowledge in a range of contexts. They should be able to ask thoughtful questions, evaluate evidence, solve problems, communicate their ideas using scientific vocabulary and understand how scientific discoveries have transformed the world. Most importantly, we want our children to leave us as curious, informed and responsible citizens who are excited by discovery, equipped with the skills to investigate and understand the world scientifically, and prepared for the opportunities and challenges of the future.

Miss Worthington is the Science Lead at Scholar Green Primary School and is passionate about ensuring that all pupils experience a high-quality science education that inspires wonder, enquiry and achievement.

Examples of Work

Scientific Enquiry

At Scholar Green Primary School, we are proud to have achieved the Science Primary Quality Mark. During our science lessons. we focus on teaching scientific knowledge, enquriy skills and studying different scientists. We feel that is is really important that the children experience science for themselves through practical hands on activities.

Science begins in the Early Years where children learn about Uderstanding the World. This is done through discussions and practical activities. It then continues through Key Stage one and all the way through until Year 6. By the end of Year 6, children should have the confidence to plan a range of scientific enquiries independently and draw the conclusions from these.

STEM

Science is an exciting and important part of life at our school. Through our STEM Club, pupils have the opportunity to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics beyond the classroom, developing curiosity, creativity and problem-solving skills through a range of engaging activities and projects. To find out more about the opportunities available, please visit our STEM page under the Wider Curriculum drop-down menu.

Careers Week

Each year, we hold a Careers Week to help pupils explore the wide range of opportunities linked to science and other related fields. The week is designed to inspire curiosity about how science is used in the real world and to highlight the many pathways that studying science can lead to.

This year, we were pleased to welcome a radiologist, who shared how science is used in medical imaging and patient care, as well as scientists from Siemens, who spoke about their work in scientific research, engineering and technological innovation. These experiences helped pupils to understand how science skills are used across a variety of exciting careers.

Science in the real world

Science at Scholar Green Primary is closely linked to the real world, helping children understand how scientific knowledge and skills are used beyond the classroom. Pupils explore how science underpins a wide range of careers, including medicine, engineering, environmental science, veterinary work, space exploration and technology, showing the many ways scientific thinking shapes our future. Through practical investigations, children develop key skills such as questioning, observing, analysing and problem-solving, which are highly valued in everyday life and across many professions. Learning is also linked to important local, national and global issues, including climate change, sustainability, health and innovation, helping pupils understand how science can be used to address real-world challenges. Inspirational figures in science, both past and present, are shared throughout the curriculum to motivate and encourage curiosity, resilience and ambition, showing children that science can lead to exciting discoveries and meaningful impact on the world.
