Art & Design
At Scholar Green, our Art and Design curriculum encourages creativity, imagination and self-expression, allowing children to explore a wide range of materials, techniques and artistic styles. Pupils are given opportunities to develop their skills in drawing, painting, sculpture and mixed media, while being inspired by a variety of artists from different cultures and time periods. We value the importance of creativity in helping children to communicate ideas and develop confidence in their own unique artistic voice. As part of our commitment to celebrating and showcasing children’s talents, we regularly take part in local art competitions, including the annual Rotary Club art competition, where pupils have the opportunity to share their work beyond the classroom and achieve recognition for their creativity. Through a rich and engaging curriculum, we aim to nurture confident, imaginative and expressive young artists who take pride in their work and enjoy the creative process.
Art Curriculum Design
Our Art curriculum is designed to provide children with a consistent and progressive journey through creativity and artistic development. Across every year group, children follow the same structured process, enabling them to build confidence and deepen their understanding as they move through the school.
Throughout the curriculum, children are given time to develop and practise key artistic skills through a clear process of designing, making and evaluating. This approach encourages children to experiment, refine their ideas and reflect on their work, helping them to grow as independent and thoughtful artists.
Our aim is for every child to develop creativity, confidence and a love of art while building the skills and knowledge needed to express themselves effectively.
Artists, Architects and Designers
At Scholar Green, children learn about a range of significant artists, architects and designers. These significant individuals are carefully linked to the artistic skills and techniques being taught, helping children to make meaningful connections between their learning and the wider world of art and design.
Sketchbooks
Sketchbooks play an important role within our Art curriculum and are unique to each child. They provide children with a personal space to explore, develop and record their creative journey, showcasing their ideas, experiences and imagination in a purposeful way.
Children use their sketchbooks to experiment with techniques, collect inspiration, practise skills and refine their ideas before creating final pieces. They are encouraged to take risks, reflect on their work and make meaningful connections to the artists and themes they study. Over time, sketchbooks become a record of each child’s individual growth and creativity, celebrating their progress and artistic development.
