English Curriculum including Oracy
English Co-ordinator: Hayley Hancock
At Scholar Green, we believe that English is at the heart of learning and provides children with the essential skills they need to communicate confidently and succeed across the curriculum. Our English curriculum is designed to inspire a love of reading, writing and spoken language through engaging, creative and purposeful learning opportunities. We place a strong emphasis on promoting the spoken word, encouraging pupils to develop confidence in expressing their ideas, performing, debating and speaking clearly in a range of contexts. In Early Years and Key Stage 1, reading is taught systematically using Read Write Inc, ensuring children build strong foundations in phonics, fluency and comprehension from the very start of their learning journey. Through high-quality texts, rich vocabulary experiences and meaningful writing opportunities, children are supported to become enthusiastic readers and skilled writers who can write for a variety of purposes and audiences. Alongside this, we maintain high academic expectations and are proud that our pupils consistently perform well in statutory assessments. At Scholar Green, we aim to develop articulate, imaginative and resilient learners who are equipped with the literacy skills needed for both school life and the wider world.
English Curriculum
Our school believes that English skills are vital to the development of children so they are prepared for their future life. A broad and balanced English programme using the National Curriculum 2014 and Early Years Foundation Curriculum which determines the skills that each year group and Key Stage must cover. A range of genres are studied and promoted. A variety of resources are used to promote a reading and writing culture. Children are given a range of writing opportunities including the use of paired, group and independent writing tasks. This is developed across both Key Stages, so that the children learn to respond appropriately and supportively to each other regardless of gender, age, cultural or ethnic background.
Voice 21 is a leading education charity dedicated to improving students' speaking and listening skills across schools in the United Kingdom. The organisation believes that effective communication is essential for academic success, future employment, and active participation in society. Through training programmes, resources, and a network of member schools, Voice 21 helps teachers embed oracy—the ability to express oneself clearly and confidently—into everyday classroom practice. By promoting discussion, debate, and presentation skills, Voice 21 aims to ensure that every young person has the confidence and ability to use their voice effectively.
