Year 2 - Miss Rigby 2025 - 2026

Miss Rigby

A very warm welcome to Year 2!

We are delighted to welcome both new and returning families to another exciting year of learning, discovery and achievement.

Year 2 is a significant year in your child's primary education journey. During this year, children become increasingly independent learners, develop greater confidence and build on the strong foundations established so far in Key Stage 1. We provide a happy, nurturing and stimulating learning environment where every child is encouraged to be curious, resilient and ambitious.

Throughout the year, children enjoy a broad, balanced and exciting curriculum which inspires creativity and a love of learning.

Subjects include:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • History
  • Geography
  • Art and Design
  • French
  • Design and Technology
  • Computing
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Religious Education
  • Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)

Reading

Reading is at the heart of our curriculum and is one of the most important ways you can support your child at home.

We ask that children read at least four times every week with an adult. These reading sessions do not need to be long—just 15-20 minutes of focused reading and discussion can make a significant difference to your child's confidence, fluency and comprehension.

Children should bring their reading book and reading diary to school every day. Reading diaries are checked every Monday, and children who have read four or more times during the week for half of the weeks in the half term will receive their Reading Treat as a reward for their commitment and effort.

When listening to your child read, we encourage you to:

  • discuss the story and characters;
  • ask questions about what they have read;
  • practise sounding out unfamiliar words;
  • encourage expression and fluency;
  • record each reading session in the reading diary.

Spellings

Spellings are sent home at the beginning of each half term via SchoolSpider, allowing children to become familiar with the spelling patterns and common exception words they will be learning this year.

Children are tested every Thursday, and regular practice at home helps to build confidence and improve both spelling and writing. We recommend practising little and often throughout the week rather than trying to learn all the words in one session.

PE

Physical Education plays an important role in promoting healthy lifestyles, teamwork and resilience.

Please ensure your child comes to school wearing their PE kit on the allocated PE days. Information regarding PE days will be shared at the beginning of each term. Earrings should be removed before school and long hair should be tied back.

Homework

In Year 2, homework consists of reading, learning the 3 spellings of the week and Numbots. Developing secure number knowledge is an essential aspect of the Key Stage 1 curriculum. To support this, children must spend at least 20 minutes each week on Numbots. The login details for the app are in the back of their reading diaries.

Numbots helps children develop rapid recall of number bonds and addition and subtraction facts through engaging games and activities. The more children practise these key skills, the more confident and fluent they become in mathematics.

Regular use at home makes a significant difference and complements the learning taking place in school.

Educational Visits

Where possible, learning is enriched through practical activities, investigations, educational visits and cross-curricular links, helping children to make meaningful connections and understand how their learning applies to the wider world.

Tattenhall Residential

One of the highlights of Year 2 is our exciting one-night residential visit to Tattenhall Residential Centre which takes place in the summer term. For many children, this is their first experience of staying away from home, making it a memorable opportunity to develop confidence, independence and resilience in a safe and supportive environment.

During their stay, children take part in a range of exciting activities that support their learning in Geography and Art and Design. They explore the local area through guided walks and fieldwork, learning how to observe and describe both human and physical features of the environment. Using maps, simple plans and directional language, pupils develop their geographical knowledge while discovering more about the village and its surrounding countryside.

The residential also provides opportunities for children to work collaboratively and solve problems in an environment beyond the classroom. Whether they are exploring nature, investigating the local environment or sharing meals and evening activities together, pupils develop valuable life skills including teamwork, communication and responsibility.

For many children, the residential becomes one of their favourite memories of Year 2. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn outside the classroom, strengthen friendships and create lasting memories while bringing their Geography and Art learning to life.

Thank you for your continued support. We are looking forward to an exciting year full of learning and memorable experiences. We can't wait to see all that the children will achieve in Year 2!
